I also used wine crates to build some smaller planters. Most large liquor stores will give you any wine crates they have lying around. I sealed the crates with Urethane, lined them with plastic, drilled holes in the bottom, and placed screen over the bottom. They sit on the wall in the same way that the larger boxes do (including a board on the outside of the wall to prevent them from tipping).
